Question 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Preliminary Task
My product

When looking at my preliminary task I believe that the editing has improved because the match on action is more fluent. I also believe what when shooting the preliminary task we was unsure of how we was going to shoot the footage because we would unaware of what was going to look good. However when doing our product I thought that we had more confidence of what was going to look right when shooting and what specific angles were suitable. We also remember the 180 degree rule so the audience would not be confused as to why the character has changed position. So to make the audience aware of where the character was we would move with the character. Also when editing we was more comfortable as we had more of an idea to how Final Cut Pro worked for example when cutting out certain parts of the clip and we was able to get rid of the specific footage that we wanted to.

Question 6

Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?

Question 4

Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

If I had a large budget the type of distributors that I would approach to distribute my film would be companies such as:
New Line Cinema

Lionsgate

These would be the institutions that I would approach as they are the distributors that are most likely to distribute films that are in a genre of thriller. If I wanted this film to be successful i would choose a large budget company however large budget companies most likely have project of their own that they are working on. Also they would not distribute an amateur they would prefer someone that has experience and a good reputation. They would avoid amateurs so they do not end up with a bad reputation in the industry.

Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Preliminary Task

From doing this premilinary task I have learnt that when you are filming you have to remeber the 180 degree rule. If you do not use this rule then it confuses the audience as to where the characters are in the scene. One thing to make the editing easier is to film shots that that can transition into the next shot so it makes the editng seem more fluent and to minimise visible editing.

5.   Do you like to know the storyline during in the opening sequence?
Yes
No
If yes please specify
.....................................................................................................................................

The results that I have got from this questionnaire is that most of the audience prefer to watch comedy, horror and thriller. The thing that draws the audience into the beginning of the movie is the soundtrack. The audience all believe that watching the tralier of the movie will make them more likey to go and watch the movie. When asking the audience if the main character dies at the beginning of the movie does it have an effect on them. The reply was that it does have and effect on them as they gett attached to the main character and that was the main reason for them to go see the movie as they are interested in the main character. When asking the audience if they like to know the storyline during the opening sequence the response was no.

This response helps us develop our ideas as it allows us to know that the audience does not like to see the main character to be murdered at the beginning of the film, so in our opening sequence we will not have a murder. Also from the response we are also able to know that during the opening sequence not to give the storyline away as they audience like a sense of mystery. Another thing that I have got from the response is that the audience enjoy the impact the soundtrack has on the movie, so we are able to focus on the type soundtrack that we use for our opening sequence.

Research into generic codes and conventions

The genre that I am going to research is thriller.

Narrative - the basic storyline of this genre is the protagonist would face death they would either experience someone elses or they may experience death themselves, then there is the antagonist that focuses on the life of the protagonist and they are normally are stronger than the protagonist. And the antagonist would foucus on the mystery of the protagonist.
Character- the stock character that is in the 'The Eye' is Sydney Wells played by Jessica Alba. She plays a blind woman that has been donated eyes from a witch that could see who was going to die and when and how they wher going to die. When being donated these eyes she was able to see all of the things that the witch was able to see, also the reflection that she would see in the mirrror would be the reflection of the witch and she thought to belive the reflection she saw was what she actually looked like.
Setting/Location- these films are normally set in a everday setting, there would not be a parctiular time of day that it would be film. By doing this it makes the audience believe that these events are able to happen in every day life. However it is mainly set in the night, the type of locations that they would use would range from the large citites, hotels, petrol stations, forests, warehouses, hospitals, flats and school/college. The impact it has by using these type of locations is that it gives more realness to the film so it gives a twist to events that happen in everyday life.
Iconography- the types of costume that are used are clothing that people would wear on a casual day and for the person that is trying to create the tense and scary atmosphere would normally be wearing dark clothing.
Cinematography- there are lot of extreme close ups used in this genre to so certain impact the atmosphere has on the character and the audience are about to focus more on them areas. Other shots that used alot in this genre are extreme long shots to establish the location. High and low angle shots are used so to show dominance.
Sound- the type sound effects that are used are banging of doors, scrashing blackboards and screech in on glass. the type of non diegetic sound that would be used to emphasise the mood of the atmosphere is a dreary soundtrack and screams of little children.

Opening sequence analysis 1 (conventions)

The opening sequence of "The Eye" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wVU8CRESp4

In this opening sequence you are able to establish the genre is thriller horror because of the soundtrack that is used during the opening sequence. Also the non diegetic dialogue that is used, you are able to hear little children screaming and a woman crying with fear. So this creates a mood that is tense and scary.

What also helps create the mood is the camera shots and editing. At the beginning of the opening sequence it shows a light being turned on in like a dirty cellar. Then there are little children through rocks at the house. You then hear a woman crying and gets a cable wire and tieing a knot, she then get a chair and ties the cable wire to a pipe. Then there is a close up of a window then a shot reverse shot of her feet on the chair and a shot reverse shot back to the window and thern a extreme close up of her eye and it show that she has fear in her eyes. When she is about to hang herself a monster attacks her and shes hung herself. And the chair is thrown across the room.

The narrative is established when the there are shots and close ups of the witch and that she is able to see monsters. It then transitions into the titles and then it cuts to a blind woman giving the audience background information about herself. From these transitions it makes the audience try and infer that there is some kind of connetion. And because the blind woman is getting surgery the audience can infer that the doner for her eys surgery was the witch that was shown in the beginning.

The first charcater that is introduced is the witch that sees the monster, she is introduce right at the beginning of the clip by showing she his scared and that she is about to hang herself. The next character that is introduced is the blind woman. so is introduced by her telling the audience how she became blind. Later she has a conversation that she is going to have surgery. After this she then is in the the hospital with bandages round her eye. From this you are able to create the engima of the film.

The engima of the film is that the blind woman has been donated the eyes of the woman thatg has just hung herself. From transitioning from the shot of the woman that has just hung herself to the blind woman the audience can infer that they would have some connection.
